Revenge plays a common theme in the Scarlet Letter
in chapter 14 paragraph 14, Chillingworth said “My finger, pointed at this man, would have hurled him from his pulpit into a dungeon, —thence, peradventure, to the gallows!”
This statement exploits Chillingworth’s desire for Dimmesdale to be hung or put in a prison.

As stated on this website, the author uses an example from chapter 14 paragraph 25 to show how Chillingworth wants revenge on Dimmesdale, but also let’s the people have their revenge on Hester. “I have left thee to the scarlet letter,” replied Roger Chillingworth. “If that have not avenged me, I can do no more!”

Themes such as guilt and blame also are huge in the story. Hester accepts the blame that her society has bestowed on her. In chapter 2 paragraph 10, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote, “In a moment, however, wisely judging that one token of her shame would but poorly serve to hide another, she took the baby on her arm, and, with a burning blush, and yet a haughty smile, and a glance that would not be abashed, looked around at her townspeople and neighbours. On the breast of her gown, in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread, appeared the letter A.”
Hester’s acceptance of the blame gives her the opportunity to possibly “redeem” herself. (Shmoop Editorial Team)

Hypocrisy is also a key theme in the Scarlet Letter. Dimmesdale kind of tries to confess, but doesn’t. The people think of him as a saint, so he continues to play the role of a saint while still holding onto the guilt that he said he would relieve himself of. Dimmesdale says that Hester should confess his name, but he won’t. Very hypocritical if you ask me.

Also, in chapter 12, Dimmesdale, for a moment, accepts that Pearl is a result of his sin, but then revokes it. He wants to, but won’t.
