“Tom was evidently perturbed at Daisy’s running around alone, for on the following Saturday night he came with her to Gatsby’s party.”
Tom did not like the idea of Daisy spending time with Gatsby. He felt threatened by Gatsby especially since he now knows that they have a past together. Tom did not want people to think that he was being cheated on even though he cheats on Daisy himself.
“I remember being surprised by his graceful, conservative fox-trot-I had never seen him dance before.”
Nick is surprised that Gatsby can actually dance because he is not from old money. He’s not actually from wealth so Nick wants to know where he learned to dance. Nick was not expecting this type of wealthy behavior from Gatsby.
“Who is this Gatsby anyhow?” demanded Tom suddenly. “Some big bootlegger?”
Tom is questioning Gatsby’s authenticity. He does not believe Gatsby’s backstory. Tom is wanting to know what Daisy sees in Gatsby because to him he’s just a liar.
“He was silent and I guessed at his unutterable depression.”
Gatsby is disappointed that Daisy did not enjoy the party. He is finally starting to understand that he will never be able to have her. He is a different kind of wealth which prevents him from ever fitting in with Daisy’s wealth. This depresses Gatsby because even though he knows he will never have her to call his own, he still can’t stop loving her.
“I’m going to fix everything just the way it was before,” he said, nodding determinedly. “She’ll see.”
Gatsby is going to make Daisy remember the good times they had. He’s going to try and rekindle their love so that Daisy will leave Tom and marry him. Gatsby wants time to turn back to the way it was five years ago. He wants her to see that he is good enough for her.
“Then he kissed her. At his lips’ touch she blossomed for him like a flower and the incarnation was complete.”
When Daisy and Gatsby kissed, the old embers were once again ignited. The kiss made Daisy feel alive. This gave Gatsby hope that all hope wasn’t lost and he still had the chance to get Daisy back.
