(in To Kill a Mockingbird Characters set)
What did Dill dare Jem to do?
Dill dared Jem to run up and touch the Radley house.
What was Scout’s first “crime” at school?
Scout’s first crime was that she could already read. Miss Caroline asked Scout to tell her father to stop teaching her.
What was Calpurnia’s fault?
Scout said it was Calpurnia’s fault that she could write bc it caused trouble for her at school.
Why did Scout rub Walter Cunningham’s nose in the dirt?
It was her way of TAKING OUT HER REVENGE ON WALTER because Scout stood up for Walter in class, which got her in more trouble with Miss Caroline.
Scout said, ” He ain’t company, Cal, he’s just a Cunningham.” What did she mean by that, and what was Cal’s answer?
Scout meant that Finches were better than Cunninghams, so she didn’t have to treat Walter as company. Calpurnia told Scout to treat anyone who came to visit as “company” and show courtesy.
What two mistakes did Miss Caroline make on the first day of school?
1. she offered Walter Cunningham money (the Cunninghams don’t take anything they can’t pay back)
2. she tried to tell Burris Ewell to go home and wash out his “cooties”
Why didn’t the Ewells have to go to school?
If the officer enforced the laws for the Ewells, Mr. Ewell would probably be jailed. Without their father, the children would be worse off than if they did not go to school. Because the children’s life was so unusual, the authorities bent the rules for them.
What did Scout and Jem find in the Radleys’ tree? (1st time)
Gum and two Indian head pennies.
Identify Mrs. Dubose.
Mrs. Dubose is an old lady who lives down the street. She berates (scolds) the children as they walk by her house.
How did Jem get even with Scout for contradicting him about “Hot Steams?”
When it was Scout’s turn to ride in the tire, he gave her an extra-hard shove. She ended up in the Radleys’ front yard.
What was the Boo Radley game?
Jem, Dill and Scout acted out the peculiar stories and few facts they heard about the Radleys.
Identify Miss Maudie.
Miss Maudie is another neighbor, about the Atticus’ age. She is open-minded and enjoys the children’s company.
What does Miss Maudie think of the Radleys?
She thinks they…
1. have a right to do whatever they want as long as they aren’t bothering anyone else
2. have a right to their privacy
Why do Dill and Jem want to give Boo Radley a note? What does Atticus say when he finds out about their plan?
They want to invite him to play with them. Atticus tells the boys to leave Arthur Radley alone and that the proper way to invite him would be at the Radley front door (instead of putting a note on a fishing pole and sticking it through the window)
How did Jem lose his pants? What did he find when he went back for them?
Jem, Scout and Dill went to look in the Radley house. They ran they were discovered, but Jem got caught on the fence. To free himself, he took off his pants and left them on the fence. When he went back for them, they were mended and folded, sitting on the fence.
What else did Jem and Scout find in the Radleys’ tree? (2nd time)
They found a ball of twine, two figures (resembling themselves) carved from soap, and a broken watch.
Why would there be no more surprises in the tree?
Mr. Nathan Radley closed the hole with cement.
What happened to Miss Maudie’s house? What was her reaction?
Miss Maudie left fires going in her house to keep her houseplants from freezing, and her house caught fire and burned down. She tried to be optimistic by saying she’d build a smaller house so she could have a bigger yard for gardening.
Identify Cecil Jacobs.
Cecil Jacobs is a mean boy at school (he is also a neighbor) who tells Scout that Atticus is defending a black man. He teases her about Atticus, but Scout promised Atticus she wouldn’t fight him.
What “disaster” happened at Christmas between Scott and Francis?
Scout and Francis got into a fight bc Francis was saying bad things about Atticus defending Tom Robinson and saying Atticus would be the “ruin” of the family. He also made fun of Dill saying he was like a stray dog no one wanted. Scout was angry, and she hit Francis. When Uncle Jack saw this, he spanked Scout.
What did Scout’s Uncle Jack learn from Scout and Atticus?
1. he didn’t get both sides of the story. Since Francis was hurt, he took his side. Scout told him that Atticus listens to both sides of the story and then decides who is wrong.
2. He should always tell the truth when kids ask a question. When Scout asked Uncle Jack a question he didn’t want to answer, he gave her a long story instead of an answer. Atticus later told him that would only confuse kids and that the truth is always best.
What brave thing does Atticus do in Chapter 10? Why are Scout and Jem shocked?
Atticus shoots a rabid dog. They are shocked bc they think Atticus has no real talents or anything to be proud of. They are surprised because Atticus doesn’t believe in fighting and, to their knowledge, had never used a gun.
What did Jem do when Mrs. Dubose said Atticus “lawed for nigg*rs?”
He snatched Scout’s new baton and used it to whack all the buds of Mrs. Dubose’s camellia bushes off.
What was Jem’s punishment?
He had to…
1. repair the damage as best he could
2. read out loud to Mrs. Dubose every afternoon for a month, Monday-Saturday
What did Jem learn from his encounter with Mrs. Dubose and following her death?
1. people are not always what they seem; you can’t understand people until you have all the facts.
2. courage is knowing you are beat before you start, but doing it anyway because it is the right thing to do
ex: Mrs. Dubose beating her addiction to morphine even though she was going to die and it would make her final weeks more painful
What items were left in the tree?
1. sticks of gum (Wrigley’s Double Mint)
2. 2 Indian-head pennies
4. soap figures, carved in the shape of Jem and Scout
5. pack of gum
6. Spelling Bee medal
8. aluminum knife
